Some seasons do not just slow a woman down — they level her. Divorce, loss, illness, betrayal, financial collapse, a prodigal child. You stand where the structure of your life used to be, and the question is not how do I keep going but how does anyone start again from this?
Scripture is unembarrassed by rubble. Whole books of it are written from ruins — Lamentations, Nehemiah, half the Psalms. And into the rubble God speaks one of the most tender promises in the Bible: I will restore the years the locust has eaten. Not excuse the locust. Not pretend the years didn't happen. Restore them. God does arithmetic with lost years that no accountant can follow.
How Walls Actually Get Rebuilt
When Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem's wall, he did not do it in a burst of inspiration. He wept first (Nehemiah 1:4) — grief is not the enemy of rebuilding; it is usually the first stone. Then he surveyed the damage honestly, by night, before saying a word (2:13). Then families rebuilt the stretch of wall nearest their own house (chapter 3) — not the whole wall, just their section. Fifty-two days later, the impossible was finished.
That is the pattern for you: grieve honestly, assess honestly, and then rebuild the section in front of you. Not the whole life at once. This month's budget. This week's routine. This one mended relationship. This one Sunday back in church. The ant rebuilds a kicked-over hill the same way she built it the first time — one grain, without bitterness, beginning immediately.
You Are Not Behind — You Are Prepared
Here is what no one tells a rebuilding woman: the hard season trained you. You know what matters now. You know what things cost. You waste less — less money, less time, fewer words — because you have gathered the fragments of a broken season and learned to let nothing be lost (John 6:12). That is not damage. That is preparation, and God does not waste it: “we know that all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28).
So start smaller than feels significant. Pray one honest prayer. Set one small stone. The God who restores years is not intimidated by your rubble — He specializes in it.
